Do not plan an Iran itinerary around a guaranteed annual free-entry day. Museums and heritage authorities may announce free or discounted admission for specific events, but the date, participating sites, visitor groups, opening hours and ticket rules can change each year.
This guide was reviewed on 16 August 2026. It replaces an old claim that every museum and attraction in Iran is free on one fixed date.
The lead image is illustrative. A ticket desk may still require payment, identification or a timed reservation on a promotional day.
Is there a national free museum day in Iran?
Iran has sometimes announced free museum admission around International Museum Day, cultural-heritage events, tourism observances or other national occasions. Those announcements are not a permanent entitlement. International Museum Day is observed globally on 18 May, but an Iranian promotion may use a different date or schedule and may not include every attraction.
Wait for a current announcement from the responsible museum or heritage authority. A social post, old blog article or previous year’s calendar is not sufficient confirmation.
Which places may not be included?
“Museums are free” does not automatically mean that every archaeological site, palace, private museum, religious complex, garden, temporary exhibition or UNESCO-listed place is included. Different organisations manage different sites and can set separate rules.
A national announcement may also exclude special exhibitions, evening programmes, guided visits or sites that require advance reservations. Ask about the exact entrance, not only the attraction name.
How to verify admission before you go
- Find the attraction’s official website or verified contact route.
- Check the announcement for the current year and exact date.
- Confirm that foreign visitors are included.
- Ask whether identification or a reservation is required.
- Check opening hours and the last admission time.
- Ask whether every section or exhibition is included.
- Reconfirm on the morning of the visit.
Budget as if normal admission applies
Build the trip budget using the current standard ticket price unless you have date-specific confirmation of a discount. Admission prices can change and some sites may use different ticket categories. Keep enough cash because international payment cards generally do not work in Iran.

A free day can be a crowded day
Promotional admission can bring long queues and full car parks. A free ticket may not be good value if it forces several rushed visits into one day. Prioritise the places that matter most to you and leave enough time to understand them.
Opening conditions can also change because of holidays, religious observances, maintenance, weather or local security instructions. Have a nearby alternative and avoid a tightly connected itinerary.
Do not use a fixed “best city” formula
Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz each have important museums and heritage sites, but the best choice depends on the confirmed programme and your interests. Persepolis and Pasargadae, for example, should not be assumed to follow the same promotion as a museum in central Shiraz.
Before making a special trip
- Confirm the event with the attraction or responsible authority.
- Check transport and opening hours for the exact date.
- Carry enough cash for normal admission and transport.
- Keep a backup attraction or activity nearby.
- Follow any current photography, dress and security instructions.
