Before a trip, you need to do something to prepare your trip as well as you want. A trip to Iran is the same. I just list here some things you need before the trip to Iran:<\/p>\n

1. A visa<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The most important part, of course! You can\u2019t travel to Iran if you don\u2019t have a visa, can you?<\/p>\n

These days, tourists can get a 30-day visa on arrival from any of Iran\u2019s international airports, and some people have received visas on arrival at the land border crossings with Armenia and Turkey.<\/p>\n

The exception: citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Canada, Colombia, India, Iraq, Jordan, Pakistan, Somalia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. They must travel with a tour\/guide at all times\u2026<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Cash<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At the moment there are no ATMs that accept foreign credit cards in Iran<\/strong>. As a result of economic sanctions on the country, this means you need to bring in all of your trip money in cold, hard cash.<\/p>\n

But never fear, it\u2019s easy to exchange money in Iran! US dollars are best, though you can also exchange Euros in major cities.<\/p>\n

Remember, better to overestimate than underestimate\u2014you don\u2019t want to be caught cashless in Iran! If worst comes to worst, some carpet sellers in the more touristy areas can charge your card and give you cash for a hefty service charge.<\/p>\n

3. Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Finding accommodation in Iran can be frustrating. Guidebooks are outdated, guesthouses fill up during the high season, and most major booking websites don\u2019t cover Iran since it\u2019s disconnected from the global banking network.<\/p>\n

4. The right clothes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Boys, you can tune out here\u2014as long as you don\u2019t walk around in tank tops and shorts, you won\u2019t offend anyone.<\/p>\n

Girls, you\u2019ll need to pack more carefully for your travel to Iran. Women in Iran\u00a0must dress according to the rules of hijab<\/em>, Islamic modest dress. In practical terms, this means you need to pack:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • A scarf to cover your head. Make sure to be wearing it when you go through customs! Also, avoid slippery silk\u2014it\u2019ll fall off your head more often than not.<\/li>\n
  • A long-sleeved shirt that covers your bum. A cardigan is fine, as are \u00be length sleeves.<\/li>\n
  • Pants that go down to your ankles. Skinny jeans are totally fine!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    One last thing to remember: Iran isn\u2019t just scorching deserts. You can find all kinds of climates in Iran, so don\u2019t forget an extra layer in case you need to bundle up!<\/p>\n

    5. A VPN<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Plan on checking Facebook while in Iran? Need to Skype with your family? Want to upload your travel videos to YouTube? Have a crippling porn addiction?<\/p>\n

    You\u2019ll need a VPN while in Iran. Iran\u2019s government is opposed to all things fun and\/or useful, has blocked most major social media networks and many news websites.<\/p>\n

    Blocked in Iran:<\/strong> Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google Play, Apple App Store, Whatsapp, Viber, New York Times, BBC News, CNN, major porn sites, etc.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    VPNs help you avoid the blockade. A VPN is a program you run on your computer, tablet, or mobile to make it look like you\u2019re connecting to the internet from somewhere-not-in-Iran. Voila, the government can no longer limit your internets, and you\u2019re free to roam! They can also provide extra layers of security for your devices.<\/p>\n

    Know you must get a VPN before<\/em> going to Iran<\/strong>. Once you\u2019re within Iran\u2019s borders, getting a VPN becomes exponentially more difficult since VPN websites are blocked, as are\u00a0app stores.<\/p>\n

    6. Gifts<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Iranians have a reputation for being some of the most hospitable people in the world, and it\u2019s justified.<\/p>\n

    You\u2019re guaranteed to be invited for tea, possibly dinner, and if you\u2019re lucky, an overnight in someone\u2019s home! It\u2019s a nice gesture to bring gifts for your hosts, but you don\u2019t want to weigh your luggage down with presents for people you haven\u2019t yet met.<\/p>\n

    An easy solution: postcards. Iranians love seeing photos of tourists\u2019 countries, so bring a couple of postcards from home and write personal messages for your hosts on them when it\u2019s time to part ways.<\/p>\n

    Another solution: low denomination bills of your home currency, if they\u2019re not worth too much. It\u2019s an Iranian custom to gift small rial notes with a message written on them, and they\u2019re happy to receive the same.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
